Saorview: free Irish TV, but limited

Saorview is Ireland's free digital terrestrial TV service. With an aerial and a compatible TV you get RTÉ One, RTÉ2, Virgin Media One, Two and Three, TG4, RTÉ News, RTÉjr and a few others, with no monthly fee beyond your TV licence.

It is an excellent base, especially for news, the Late Late Show and free-to-air sport. The limits are the channel count, the lack of premium sport such as most Premier League matches, and reception, which can be patchy in some rural valleys and apartment blocks.

Sky Ireland: strong content, contracts and boxes

Sky offers a broad line-up of entertainment and sports channels, polished apps and a well-known set-top box. For many homes it is the default choice, particularly for sport.

The downsides are cost and commitment. The base package is only the start: sports, movies and extra screens are usually add-ons, and most offers come with a minimum contract. Satellite installation needs a dish, which is not always possible in rented homes or apartments.

Virgin Media Ireland: convenient bundles

Virgin Media combines TV with broadband and home phone, which is convenient if you already use them for internet. The service is solid and the bundles can be good value in the first year.

Availability depends on whether Virgin Media's network reaches your home, and like Sky, extra channels and sport tend to come as paid add-ons on top of a contract. Prices can also change after promotional periods end.

Ireland IPTV: flexible, contract-free streaming

Ireland IPTV takes a different approach. Instead of a dish, a cable or a rented box, the channels are streamed over whatever broadband you already have, to devices you already own, such as a Firestick, a Smart TV, a phone or a laptop.

Picture quality and reliability

Satellite and cable are very reliable because they do not depend on your home broadband. That is their biggest advantage. Saorview is also reliable where reception is good.

Ireland IPTV quality depends on two things: the provider's servers and your connection. With a good provider and a steady connection, HD channels look as good as satellite, and 4K is available on selected sports and film channels. Which option suits you?

There is no single right answer. As a rough guide:
