Ireland IPTV Broadband Speeds for Rural Homes

One of the most common questions we get from rural customers is whether their broadband is fast enough for Ireland IPTV. In most cases the answer is yes. Here is what you actually need and how to get the best from a slower line.

Speeds you need

As a rule of thumb: around 5 Mbps for standard definition, 10 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K, per screen. If two people watch at the same time, add the speeds together.

Test your speed properly

Run a speed test on the device you will watch on, at the time you usually watch TV. Evening speeds are often lower than morning speeds. Test on the TV or Firestick itself if possible, not just on your phone next to the router.

Stability matters more than speed

A steady 12 Mbps is better for IPTV than a connection that jumps between 50 and 2. If your speed drops often, the fix is usually your Wi-Fi rather than your broadband.

Fixes that help most

Use an Ethernet cable from the router to the TV device. If that is not possible, try powerline adapters or a mesh Wi-Fi system. Move the router off the floor and away from thick walls. Restart the router weekly.

Fixed wireless, 4G and 5G

Many rural homes use fixed wireless or mobile broadband. These work well with Ireland IPTV as long as the signal is steady. Place the router or external antenna where the signal is strongest, and check your data allowance, because an hour of HD uses around 2 to 3 GB.

National Broadband Plan

If fibre has reached your area through the National Broadband Plan, even the entry package is more than enough for several HD streams at once.
