Why the official players are limited abroad

Tip for travellers: a Firestick weighs almost nothing. Log in before you leave home, and at your destination you only need to connect it to the local Wi-Fi.

Setting up in a new country

Dealing with time zones

Time zones are the biggest challenge of watching Irish TV abroad. An All-Ireland final that throws in at 3.30pm in Dublin is on at 10.30am in New York and in the middle of the night in Sydney. A few tips:

• Use catch-up. Catch-up on every plan lets you watch a match or programme at a time that suits you.
• Check the guide in local time. With your device set to your local time zone, the TV guide converts start times automatically.
• Avoid spoilers. If you are watching later, stay off social media and the family WhatsApp group until you have seen it.

Getting a good picture from far away

The distance between you and the server can make a difference on some connections. For the smoothest picture:

• Use a wired connection wherever possible, especially in hotels and apartments.
• Test your speed at the time you plan to watch. Allow about 10 Mbps per HD screen.
• Choose HD over 4K on slower or shared connections.
• If hotel Wi-Fi is poor, a mobile hotspot on a local 4G or 5G SIM is often faster.
